A solo exhibition of works by visual artist Chris Ro, Somewhere, Here Below, Somewhat Inside, Beneath It All Yet Close Enough To Hear, Sleeps Several Silent, Whispering, Slow Beating, Constant Nevertheless Sometimes Broken Hearts., is the first event of its kind curated in-house by creative space The WilloW. Building on the keyword “Layer,” the curatorial approach seeks to unpack the multi-layered nature of the object, taking “Space” as its starting point and expanding the discussion to include “Person,” with a stopover at “Artwork.” The artist’s own works, which have themselves expanded from the linear plane of the canvas into the realm of three-dimensional installation, combine the physicality of their (semi-)transparent material with the material characteristics of silkscreening as a medium, playing not just with the concept of layers but with the very fact of their materiality.

The WilloW is housed in a building that predates the establishment of the larger Gyeongdong Market area by about 5 years. Built in 1955, the structure’s transformation into a creative space was made official via a grand re-open in August of last year. Opening now, some 10 months into its operations, this inaugural exhibition by The WilloW necessarily found its genesis in a series of conversations about the inherent placeness of the Gyeongdong Market area that surrounds it. As a curator, I wondered what this space — said to “have more potential than could ever be captured by an image on social media” — might actually hold beyond the flattened image: a question, in turn, that linked directly to ongoing questions about temporality that I have been interested for a long time. Therefore, the narrative of this exhibition is not limited in scope to the literal location of the Gyeongdong Market and its surrounds; rather, the implied approach here is one that centers respecting — and seeking deeper encounters with — the object, which in turn claims its own layers of time.

2024년 6월 5일 수요일부터 7월 7일 일요일까지 크리에이티브 스페이스 더 윌로에서 열리는 전시《어딘가, 여기 아래, 어느 정도 안쪽, 모든 것 아래 하지만 아직 들을 수 있는 정도로 가까운 곳에, 여럿이 잠들어 있습니다. 조용히, 속삭이며, 천천히 뛰고 있는, 끊임없는 그렇지만 때로는 부서진 마음들.》는 시각예술가 크리스 로의 개인전이자 더 윌로의 첫 기획전시이다. 이번 전시는 겹, 층위를 뜻하는 ‘레이어(Layer)’를 키워드로, 대상이 지닌 다층성을 화두로 꺼내며 ‘공간’에서 시작해 ‘작품’을 경유해 ‘사람’으로 논의를 확장한다. 평면에서 입체적인 공간 설치로 확장된 작가 크리스 로의 작품은 (반)투명한 소재의 물성과 실크스크린의 매체적 특성으로 레이어를 즉물적으로 드러낸다.

더 윌로가 위치한 건물의 시작은 경동시장 일대가 형성된 1960년보다도 5년을 앞선다. 1955년 세워져 69년의 세월을 지나온 건물은 크리에이티브 스페이스로 탈바꿈해 작년 8월 공식적으로 문을 열었다. 약 10개월 만에 여는 첫 기획전시는 필연적으로 더 윌로가 위치한 공간과 경동시장이 지닌 고유의 장소성에 관한 대화에서 출발했다. ‘소셜미디어 속 이미지보다 실제의 경험에서 더 많은 가능성을 내포한’ 공간은 평면적 이미지를 초월한 무엇을 담고 있을까에 대한 고민은 기획자가 오랜 시간 관심을 두어온 ‘시간성’을 둘러싼 질문과 연결되었다. 따라서 본 전시의 기획은 경동시장 일대라는 한 장소에 국한된 이야기가 아닌, 시간의 층위를 지닌 대상을 존중하고 깊이 만나려는 태도를 함의한다.

저는 때때로 한 공간에 오래 앉아 있는 예술가입니다. 그리고 때때로 제가 충분히 오래 앉아 있으면 결국 공간이 저에게 무언가를 말합니다. 때로는 그 공간이 말하는 것이 말이 되기도 하고요. 때로는 그렇지 않을 때도 있습니다. 때로는 말이 되기도 하고 때로는 말이 아닐 때도 있습니다. 때로는 조건이 맞으면 저는 이런 것들을 들을 수 있습니다. 듣고, 보고, 듣는 이러한 과정과 유사하게 저는 때때로 물리적, 시각적 표현이 없는 주제와 개념에 끊임없이 매료됩니다. 소리, 유머, 도둑, 지리학과 같은 비시각적 개념은 저의 작품에서 끊임없이 반복되는 주제입니다. 우리가 알고 있지만 한 번도 본 적이 없는 것들. 우리가 시각적으로 경험한 적은 없지만 알고 있는 것들은 어떻게든 존재합니다. 건축과 그래픽을 전공한 저의 작품은 인쇄, 설치, 애니메이션, 글쓰기, 전통적인 회화 및 드로잉의 요소를 혼합합니다. 저는 수줍음이 많고 건망증이 심합니다. 하지만 저는 또한 정직합니다.
