The WilloW

『패치워크!』는 2025년 8월 28일부터 9월 28일까지 더 윌로(The WilloW)에서 열린 동명의 전시 《패치워크!》와 연계해 출간되었습니다. 본 출판물은 동시대의 필연적 특성인 파편화를 세계를 다시 쓰는 출발점으로 삼았던 전시의 궤적을 지면 위로 옮겨옵니다. 전시 《패치워크!》는 전통적 서사 구조에 질문을 던지며 ‘구멍 난 몸’으로서의 서사를 복원하고자 했습니다. 네 명의 참여 작가(박선호, 사토 토모코, 아오야기 나츠미, 임지지)는 자기이론적 에세이, 기록된 역사와 신체에 기억된 감각, 사변적 서사, 사유의 비약적 확장으로부터 출발하는 작업 세계를 선보였습니다. 본 출판물은 이들이 파편화된 이미지와 텍스트로 직조해 낸 이야기와 그 틈새를 시각적으로 구조화하고, 비선형적이고 불연속적인 사유 자체를 미학적 실천으로 엮어냅니다.

본 출판물에는 전시를 기획한 신재민의 도록을 여는 글과 전시 서문을 비롯해, 작가·독립연구자인 김지승의 「예언적 조각들」, 영화감독·시각예술가·독립연구자인 백종관의 「패치워크, 태피스트리, 《패치워크!》」가 연계 텍스트로 수록되어 있습니다. 두 필자의 글은 전시를 외부의 시선으로 조망하기보다 작품에 다가가 응답하는 텍스트입니다. 참여 작가들의 작품이 직조해 낸 틈새에서 각 필자의 언어로 전시의 감각을 번역하고, 이를 또 하나의 섬세한 패치워크 조각으로 엮어냈습니다. 수록된 글을 통해 이미지를 언어로 감각하고, 언어가 다시 이미지로 확장되는 경험을 하실 수 있기를 바랍니다. 또한 출판물에는 발췌한 작품 스틸 이미지와 스크립트, 전시 전경 등이 포함되어 있습니다. 완전함으로 환원할 수 없는 세계 속에서 기꺼이 서로의 틈새를 내어주며 엮이는 패치워크의 감각을 본 출판물을 통해 만나보시길 바랍니다.

The publication Patchwork! is published in conjunction with the eponymous exhibition, Patchwork!, which was held at The WilloW from August 28 to September 28, 2025. It is the result of relocating the trajectory of the exhibition onto the printed page, taking fragmentation—an inevitable characteristic of the contemporary moment—as the starting point for rewriting this fractured world. The exhibition Patchwork! questioned traditional narrative structures and sought to restore a terrain of “perforated narratives.” The four participating artists—Sunho Park, Tomoko Sato, Natsumi Aoyagi, and Imzizi—presented artistic worlds stemming from autotheoretical essays, recorded histories and embodied sensibilities, speculative narratives, and radical associative leaps of thought. This publication visually structures the stories woven from their fragmented images and texts, along with the gaps, interruptions, and disjunctions between them, weaving non-linear and discontinuous thought itself into an aesthetic and performative practice.

The publication features the preface of this publication and the introduction by the curator, Jaemin Shin, alongside responsive texts: Prophetic Fragments by writer and independent researcher Jiseung Kim, and Patchwork, Tapestry, Patchwork! by filmmaker, visual artist, and independent researcher Jongkwan Paik. Rather than observing the exhibition from an external gaze, the writings of these two contributors are texts that come into proximity with and respond to the artworks. Within the gaps woven by the participating artists’ works, each writer translated the sensations of the exhibition into their own language, weaving them into yet another delicate piece of patchwork. Through these texts, we hope you experience the sensing of images through language, and the expansion of language back into images. The publication also includes excerpted artwork still images, scripts, and installation views. Through this book, we invite you to encounter the sensation of patchwork, willingly yielding gaps to one another and intertwining within a world irreducible to completeness.
