전시 《Walking Korea: Cut Pieces》는 퓰리처상 수상 저널리스트이자 내셔널 지오그래픽 펠로우인 폴 살로펙(Paul Salopek)이 11년 넘게 인류의 발자취와 이주의 역사를 걸음으로 기록해 온 Out of Eden Walk 프로젝트에서 출발한다. ‘느린 저널리즘’의 실천으로 2013년 1월 에티오피아에서 시작된 이 여정은 현재도 진행 중이며, 올해 7월부터 살로펙은 인천항부터 부산, 그리고 일본으로 이어지는 아시아 대륙의 테두리(Asia Rim)를 걷고 있다.

독립기획자 임수영이 살로펙과 협업해 기획한 《Walking Korea: Cut Pieces》는 횡단의 여정을 저널리즘이 아닌 전시의 언어로 해석하고 서술하기를 시도하며, 여섯 명의 국내외 작가(김옥선, 김영래, 손현선, 알렉산더 우가이, 전진경, 차지량)들의 작업을 소개한다. 전시는 함께 걷는 여정을 '가위질'에 비유한다. 대륙을 관통하며 성실하게 시간과 대지를 오려내는 움직임, 그리고 ‘앞’을 향해 가는 길목에서 마주한 개인과 공동체의 삶에 깊숙이 침투해 이를 글로 소통하는 방식은 끊임없이 날과 날을 교차시키는 과정으로, 예술 하는 사람들의 실천과도 닮아있다.

전시에 참여한 작가들은 주변으로 밀려 나간 사회의 지형도를 섬세하게 도려내 조명하거나 허구적 서사를 통해 시간의 층위를 가위질하고, 도구의 기능을 잘라내어 어색한 것들과 조합해 보며, 현실에 베인 상처에 집중해 본다. 자신만의 속도와 방식, 매체로 오려 낸 시간과 이야기, 공동체의 형태는 쉼 없이 이주하는 물류와 자본의 통로인 경동 시장에 위치한 ‘더 윌로’에서 하나의 지형을 이룬다. 전시는 울퉁불퉁한 이 지형의 윤곽을 더듬으며 같이 걷고, 길 잃으며, 잠시 멈추어 서 보길 제안한다.

The exhibition Walking Korea: Cut Pieces is inspired by Paul Salopek, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and National Geographic Fellow, and his ongoing Out of Eden Walk project. For over 11 years, Salopek has documented the footsteps and migration history of humanity through walking, a practice rooted in "slow journalism." Beginning in January 2013 in Ethiopia, this journey continues today, with Salopek traversing the Asia Rim from Incheon to Busan and onward to Japan since July of this year.

Curated in collaboration with independent curator Sooyoung Leam, Walking Korea: Cut Pieces reinterprets Salopek’s journey through the language of exhibition-making. Featuring works by six artists— Oksun Kim, Youngrae Kim, Alexander Ugay, Son Hyunseon, Jun Jinkyoung, Cha Ji Ryang —the exhibition likens the act of walking together to "cutting." This metaphor evokes the deliberate motion of traversing land and time, interweaving personal and communal lives encountered along the way. It mirrors the creative process of artists who continuously navigate and dissect the world around them.

The participating artists explore themes of displacement and temporality in diverse ways. They delicately cut-out and thereby illuminate the fringes of society’s topography, slice through layers of time with fictional narratives, reimagine tools by severing their functions to create strange juxtapositions, and focus on the wounds etched by reality. Each artist shapes time, stories, and forms of community at their own pace, using their distinct methods and mediums. Together, these works construct a shared terrain within The WilloW, located in Gyeongdong Market—a relentless conduit of migrating goods and capital. The exhibition invites visitors to trace the uneven contours of this terrain, to walk together, to lose their way, and to pause for a moment of reflection.
