김상하ᐧ최현아의 2인전 《Surrogate/Cut》은 영화의 문법과 수행적 조건이 하나의 작품 속에서 교차하거나 작품 간 서로 개입하는 지점을 만들어낸다. '컷'은 영화의 숏과 숏을 분절해 이어 붙이는 편집 개념을 전시의 시공간을 직조하는 구조적 장치로 들여온 것이자, 삶의 연속성이 절단되는 몸이 놓인 조건을 은유하기도 한다. 동시에, 배우를 허구적 인물의 '대리자'로 상정하여 그가 스스로 텅 빈 기표가 되어 배역을 수행하고 타자의 목소리를 덧입는 상태를 전시 안의 조형 어법으로 변환해 낸다. 여기에 시간 기반 매체인 영상과 그 시간 축에 연동되어 변화하는 조건(빛과 소리), 그리고 그에 반응하는 조각의 덩어리가 상호 간섭하는 공간이 조성되고, 당신은 환영적 이미지와 실재가 교란되는 이 현상의 일렁임을 목격하는 자로 초대된다. 전시는 어긋나고 덜컥거리는 시각성에 익숙해지는 눈을 당신에게 쥐여 준다.

In Surrogate/Cut, a two-person exhibition by Hiiona Choi and Sangha Khym, cinematic grammar and performative conditions converge, creating points of intersection within and across the artworks. The "Cut" appropriates the cinematic mechanism of splicing shots, employing it as a structural apparatus to weave the exhibition's temporal and spatial dimensions, while simultaneously operating as a metaphor for a body whose continuity has been ruptured. By defining the actor as a "Surrogate" for a fictional persona, the exhibition translates the condition of being an empty signifier into spatial and visual language. Within this constructed environment, time-based media, cued light and sound, the sculptural masses generate mutual friction. Here, the exhibition positions the audience as a witness to the oscillation between illusion and reality, demanding a gaze that becomes attuned to a misaligned, stuttering visuality.
