더 윌로 소개

더 윌로(The WilloW)는 서울 동대문구 제기동의 경동시장 안에 위치한 크리에이티브 스페이스(Creative Space)로, 경동시장이 개설되기 이전인 1955년 사료창고로 지어진 건물에 2023년 8월 공식적으로 문을 열었습니다. 전통시장 속 예술공간이라는 장소성에 따라, 더 윌로는 상이한 의미 체계들이 충돌하고 교차하는 역동적인 장으로 작동합니다. 익숙한 작업이 낯선 맥락에 놓일 때 발생하는 전이와 재해석의 가능성을 탐구하며, 이질적인 요소들의 병치와 조합을 통한 미적 실험을 지지합니다. 또한 60여 년간 축적된 다층적 시간성을 간직한 이 공간은, 느린 호흡으로 움직이며 지속적인 실천과 관계 맺기를 이어 나가고자 합니다.

브랜드 아이덴티티

더 윌로의 브랜드 아이덴티티는 공간이 지향하는 ‘균형’과 ‘변하지 않는 가치(timelessness)’를 시각적으로 구현합니다. 브랜드 로고는 공간의 기원이 되는 1955년, 즉 사료창고가 지어진 해와 같은 해에 제작된 서체 ‘Egizio’를 토대로 디자인되었습니다. 아울러 로고의 앞과 뒤에 위치한 두 개의 ‘W’는 서로 좌우가 반전된 형태로 배치되어, 공간이 내포한 역사적 층위를 시각적으로 환기함과 동시에, 그 시간성을 현재로 연장합니다. 이는 동일한 물리적 구조를 공유하면서도 전혀 다른 서사를 담고 있는 공간—과거의 사료창고와 현재의 크리에이티브 스페이스— 간의 상이한 의미 작용을 시각적으로 암시합니다. 약 70년에 걸친 시간의 집적이 만들어낸 장소적 분위기와 상반되는 브랜드 컬러는 의도적 불협을 형성하며, 더 윌로의 핵심 키워드인 ‘균형, 상충과 충돌, 경계 위, 이질성의 조합’을 보여줍니다.

About The WilloW

The WilloW is a creative space located within Gyeongdong Market in Jegi-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul. Officially opened in August 2023, it occupies a former feed warehouse built in 1955—predating the market’s establishment.Embedded in the context of a traditional marketplace, The WilloW functions as a dynamic site where divergent systems of meaning intersect and collide. It explores the potential for transference and reinterpretation that arises when familiar works are situated in unfamiliar contexts, and supports aesthetic experimentation through the juxtaposition and composition of disparate elements. Rooted in a site layered with about seven decades of temporal sediment, The WilloW embraces slowness and commits to sustained practice and long-term relationships.

Brand Identity

At the core of The WilloW’s brand identity is a visual language that conveys its pursuit of “balance” and “timelessness.” The brand logo is based on Egizio, a typeface released in 1955—the same year the building, originally a feed warehouse, was constructed. The left-right-reversed shape of the two “W”s positioned at the beginning and end of the logo evokes the layered historicity embedded within the space, while simultaneously reflecting its temporal continuity. This gestures toward the semantic divergence between two temporalities—the former warehouse and the creative space—that keep the same physical structures visually alluding to the layered narratives that coexist within the site. The brand color, deliberately dissonant with the atmosphere shaped by nearly seventy years of accumulated time, introduces a visual tension. This contrast embodies key concepts central to The WilloW’s ethos: “balance,” “collision,” “on boundaries,” and “the aesthetic potential of juxtaposing disparate elements.”
